Let’s protect sanctity of elections – Nii Frankwa II

The Oyibi Gonten Mantse, who is also the Regent of the Nungua Mankralo stool, Nii Bortey Kofi Frankwa II, has called for a thorough investigation into alleged malpractices in the 2020 general election to help build public confidence in the electoral process.

A detailed investigation into the allegations of voter fraud and intimidation by some security officials during the election period would help bring sanctity to the electoral process which he said was key for social cohesion.

“This is not the period to be silent as leaders and that is why I add my voice to those calling for a proper audit of the elections to help bring things into proper perspective and restore trust in the electoral process as a way of building social cohesion,” Nii Frankwa II told the Daily Graphic in an interview last Sunday.

National Cohesion

Nii Frankwa II who was speaking to the media on the aftermath of the December 7 election said there was a need for national cohesion to ensure development in a post COVID-19 world economy hence the need to resolve all outstanding differences that had emanated from the results of the elections declared by the Electoral Commission (EC).

“We are already saddled with a pandemic which has lots of consequences for the future economy of this country so the last thing we can afford disunity resulting from a disputed election,” he said.

Nii Frankwa II explained that the country must be moving in “the same direction to help navigate through the storms ahead.”

“We must be careful not to ignore the concerns of the people who have problems with the election. we will need everybody onboard to develop. We must be able to get the public to trust in the electoral system by providing them a transparent investigation into all the allegations so that we could all move forward trusting in the process and moving on together,” he said.

Future

Nii Frankwa II urged the political leadership of the country to consider the future of the youth and children in the country and ensure that “the peace is preserved” while measures are taken to help restore public trust in the electoral process.

“We must not sweep such issues under the carpet because whatever that will happen will have consequences for the future generation and we have a responsibility to preserve for them a peaceful country with harmony,” he said.
