Former president John Mahama has described the arrest of a deputy general secretary of the National Democratic Congress over alleged treasonable comments as “disproportionate.”
Mr. Koku Anyidoho in a radio interview served notice the President Akufo-Addo administration is likely to be overthrown similar to a coup d’état witnessed in 1972 against his father.
“There will be a civilian coup d’etat. There will be a social revolution and the movement is starting on Wednesday,” said the Bull, as Anyidoho is affectionately called.
He has been charged with high treason.
Reacting to the news from Sierra Leone, where Mahama is observing that country’s election, he said the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has shot itself in the foot as a party which prides itself in free speech.
“As a party that prides itself in the non-criminalization of speech, with a self-acclaimed human rights activist as President, the arrest of K. Anyidoho with armed men in the middle of a press event is obviously disproportionate,” Mr. Mahama posted on his Facebook wall.
He added: “Moreso, the high-handed police response to innocent citizens waiting at the CID HQ is condemnable.”
I support Ghana First demo – Mahama
In a related development, Mahama has endorsed the ongoing demonstration in Accra dubbed “Ghana First”.
The demonstration, which is being led by former government officials including former vice president Kwesi Amissah-Arthur, is against a military agreement between the governments of Ghana and the US.
The Ghana – US defence cooperation agreement gives American soldiers unimpeded access to certain key installations and in return the West African country will earn $20 million by way of training of its soldiers and equipment.
Mahama, who is currently in Sierra Leone as an election observer, tweeted in support of the demonstration.
