President John Dramani Mahama has disclosed that some contractors have been indicted by Auditor General for taken double payments from the Road Fund and Ministry of Finance.

According to the President, contractors found culpable will be sanctioned. He made this statement during his “Thank You Tour” of the Eastern Region on Sunday July 20,2025.

“When we assumed office, we directed for suspension of road contracts for auditing to be done because we noticed that projects that Road Fund has paid for, same road certificate has been sent to Ministry of Finance for double payment. So we instructed the Auditor General to conduct an audit on those roads. The Auditor General has completed the audit and submitted the report. We are going to let all the contractors return to site except those who received double payment. They will be punished.” President Mahama disclosed.

The President reiterated that strategic infrastructure projects including construction of a Bridge over river Afram in Afram Plains will be carried out under the “Big Push” development initiative.

He also assured the completion of Koforidua Bunso -Apedwa dualization, finalization of Osino-Engresi -Anyinam bypass project, the Eastern Regional Hospital and other stalled projects in region.

President John Mahama further hinted of plans to expand Eastern Regional Water Supply to serve additional one million people.

He assured that budget allocation has been made for payment of academic user fees of first year students in public tertiary institutions under the “No Fees stress” policy for the next academic year.

President Mahama expressed gratitude to the people of the Eastern Region for their massive endorsement in the 2024 general election.

He pledged to fulfill his campaign promises and deliver meaningful development.

President of the Eastern Regional House of Chiefs and Paramount Chief of Manya Krobo, Nene Sakite II, commended President Mahama for showing signs of promising future in his 120 days .

He called for intensified and sustained action against illegal mining to save the environment including cultural heritage sites from destruction.

The Eastern Regional House of Chiefs tabled some developmental challenges before the President.

“While we understand that it may be too early to present a long list of requests, we must nonetheless draw attention to a few pressing issues confronting our region. The state of infrastructure-particularly roads, health facilities, and educational institutions-continues to affect the quality of life of our people. In Kroboland, for instance, the road network is in an especially deplorable state. We trust that your administration will prioritize these needs” said Nene Sakite II, Kornor of Manya Krobo traditional Area and President of Eastern Regional House of Chiefs.

Paramount Chief of New Juaben Traditional Area, Daasebre Nana Kwaku Boateng III, praised President Mahama for stabilizing the exchange rate and introducing the “No Stress Fee” policy for first-year tertiary students.
