President John Dramani Mahama has highlighted the security measures underpinning his government’s 24-hour economy initiative, stressing that continuous protection for workers and businesses is central to the policy’s success.
Speaking at a media encounter at the Jubilee House on Wednesday, President Mahama explained that the 24-hour economy is not just about extending working hours but also about ensuring a safe environment for all participants.
“To guarantee safety within this evolving ecosystem, a dedicated 24-hour economy policing secretariat has been established in the Ministry of Interior to provide continuous security support across the country. These bold steps signal a clear national commitment to building a resilient, inclusive, and job-rich economy,” he said.
The initiative, aimed at expanding employment opportunities, boosting productivity, and modernizing key sectors, has already seen institutions like the Ghana Publishing Company transition to round-the-clock operations, while the Passport Office and Ghana’s foreign missions are offering 24-hour services to improve efficiency.
Ports at Tema and Takoradi now operate 24 hours daily, a move the President said will boost trade efficiency, reduce congestion, and support exporters and importers—under the watchful eyes of the dedicated security framework.
“This initiative is not just about keeping the lights on longer, it is about unlocking new shifts of productivity, widening access to jobs, and building a resilient, inclusive economy that works for all.”
Cabinet has approved the 24-hour authority bill for submission to Parliament, alongside amendments to the GIPC Act and Labour Act to regulate round-the-clock economic activity.
Complementary programs such as the Adwumawura Program and the National Apprenticeship Program will equip young people and artisans to participate safely and effectively in the new economy.
“These bold steps signal a clear national commitment to building a resilient, inclusive, and job-rich economy,” President Mahama emphasized, noting that security will remain a top priority as the policy expands nationwide.
