President John Dramani Mahama has granted amnesty to 998 prisoners across the country, following a recommendation by the Prisons Service Council and in consultation with the Council of State.
The decision, announced on Monday, August 18, 2025, was made in line with Article 72(1) of the 1992 Constitution.
Out of a total of 1,014 convicts recommended, 998 were approved for amnesty. The categories of beneficiaries include:
- First-time offenders: 787
- Death sentences commuted to life imprisonment: 87
- Life sentences commuted to 20 years definite term: 51
- Seriously ill prisoners: 33
- Convicts over 70 years irrespective of offence: 36
- Nursing mothers: 2
- Cases granted through petitions: 2

The announcement was signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Member of Parliament and Spokesperson to the President, who also serves as Minister for Government Communications.
