President John Dramani Mahama has called on traditional rulers in the Volta Region to actively participate in an upcoming National Constitution Validation Conference aimed at enhancing the role of chieftaincy in Ghana’s governance.
Speaking on Friday, January 24, during his thank-you tour of the region, President Mahama praised the region’s chiefs for their invaluable contributions to peace, stability, and nation-building.
Addressing a gathering of traditional leaders, President Mahama highlighted the significance of the chieftaincy institution in Ghana, describing it as “an enduring pillar of wisdom and guidance” that must be cherished and protected. He credited their wise counsel and dedication to fostering peace, particularly during the last general elections, as pivotal to the country’s stability.
“Our esteemed traditional rulers of the Volta Region, please permit me to extend my heartfelt appreciation to you for your vital role in our beloved nation’s governance and peace. The institution of chieftaincy in Ghana is not merely symbolic. It is an enduring pillar of wisdom and guidance and one we must cherish and protect,” the president said.
Acknowledging the turnout of chiefs and elders at the event, President Mahama noted their unwavering support and willingness to guide the nation’s leadership. He assured them that his administration would prioritize collaboration with traditional authorities as key partners in Ghana’s development.
The president apologized for any delays in the day’s schedule, attributing them to unforeseen circumstances. “Your patience and understanding testify to your love for this country and the progress we seek to achieve together,” he said.
As part of his administration’s commitment to improving governance, President Mahama announced the establishment of a committee to plan the National Constitution Validation Conference. The initiative seeks to review the Constitution with the goal of expanding the role of traditional authorities, particularly in local governance, environmental protection, and sanitation.
“I have set up a committee to plan the National Constitution Validation Conference. It is my hope that our chiefs and elders will participate fully in this review exercise so that any amendments to our Constitution required to enhance the role of the chieftaincy institution in our governance will be included,” he stated.
The president reiterated his commitment to fulfilling promises made during the campaign and addressing the concerns of the Volta Region. He emphasized the need for a strengthened partnership between traditional rulers and the government to ensure the country’s development.
