President John Dramani Mahama has vowed to restore calm and lasting peace in the conflict-prone town of Bawku in the Upper East Region, following a recent escalation of violence that claimed the lives of civilians and a police officer, and left several homes destroyed.
Addressing the Graduation Parade of the Ghana Military Academy in Accra, President Mahama condemned the recent attacks and emphasized the need for national unity and security in dealing with the situation.
“The Ghana Armed Forces is engaged in several theatres to maintain peace and security in our nation. One major flashpoint continues to be the Bawku area,” the President said. “Only two days ago, an incident in a marketplace triggered an unfortunate loss of lives and criminal vandalism of property. I wish to emphasize that nobody gains from this situation of conflict and insecurity.”
President Mahama expressed confidence in the ongoing mediation process led by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II. According to him, the government has initiated efforts to bring all stakeholders to the table through the Otumfuo’s mediation, with discussions already underway in Kumasi.
“We have triggered the Otumfuo mediation process, which saw all stakeholders participate in discussions in Kumasi on a roadmap towards peace,” he revealed. “I am assured by the Asantehene that the process will resume next week when he returns from his brief visit abroad.”
