President John Dramani Mahama on Monday evening welcomed renowned Ghanaian cleric, Peter Cardinal Appiah Turkson, back home ahead of the country’s first-ever National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving.
Cardinal Turkson is expected to deliver the sermon at the inaugural Christian thanksgiving service scheduled for Tuesday, July 1, 2025.
President Mahama expressed gratitude to the Cardinal for honouring the invitation to preach at the event, which forms part of efforts to unify the nation in reflection and gratitude.
In response, Cardinal Turkson said, “If the President of your country calls, you can’t say no,” as he reaffirmed his commitment to supporting Ghana’s progress.

He also hinted on the shared responsibility between the church and the government in providing spiritual guidance and development-focused support for the country.
Cardinal Turkson touched on the church’s growing role in promoting sustainability, revealing that the Catholic Church currently has a pilot project in Nigeria and plans to replicate it in other parts of the world.
The Cardinal, who arrived in Accra yesterday, thanked President Mahama for the warm welcome and the opportunity to lead the sermon at such a historic national occasion.

The National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving, instituted by President Mahama, will be marked annually on July 1 and will feature both Christian and Muslim services. The first in the series of interfaith prayers is set to begin tomorrow.
