Professor Baffour Agyeman-Duah, governance expert and co-founder of CDD-Ghana, says President John Dramani Mahama’s second term demonstrates a significant improvement over his first, attributing the change to lessons learned during his years in opposition.
“The difference is so glaring,” he said. “The eight years he spent in opposition must have taught him very good lessons.”
Prof. Agyeman-Duah noted that the President returned with clearer priorities and stronger discipline, particularly in economic management.
“There seems to be a real discipline in his leadership… the fiscal discipline in particular,” he observed.
Speaking on Morning Starr with Naa Dedei Tettey, he praised the Finance Ministry, the Bank of Ghana, and the broader Economic Management Team for stabilising the cedi and managing debt. “I don’t know of any country that within months is able to stabilise a currency that was in a free fall,” he said.
Highlighting Mahama’s commitment to avoiding reliance on the IMF, the professor added, “That shows determination… IMF is like a financial trap,” stressing that long-term self-reliance should guide Ghana’s economic strategy.
