The DOVSU-based District Court in Accra has denied bail to businessman, John Odartey Lamptey, the man captured in viral video assaulting a woman said to be his wife after pleading not guilty to seven charges.

Lamptey, 49, denied all the charges when he was arraigned together with his sister, Grace Lamptey – who also denied a charge of threat of harm – of the victim one Harriet Amuzu.

In Court on Wednesday, December 3, 2025, Lamptey pleaded not guilty to seven charges namely – Causing harm, threat of death, threat of harm and physical abuse (physical assault).

The rest are – three counts of engaging in domestic violence namely – sexual abuse, emotional abuse and conduct or behaviour that in anyway detracts or is likely to detract from another person’s dignity or worth as a human being.

The second accused, Grace Lamptey, said to be a food vendor was granted bail in the sum of GHc20k with one surety.

The Court said she is to report to the police every two weeks until the final determination of the case.

Both are to reappear in Court on December 16. The victim was not present in Court.

Brief facts

The brief facts of the case were that, the Complainant, aged 32 years, is unemployed and a resident of Ofankor while the first accused, John Odartey Lamptey, aged 40 years, is a businessman.

The Prosecution said, the Complainant and the first accused person are married couple and are blessed with two children

It said, the second Accused person, Grace Lamptey, 51, is a sister of the first accused person.

The prosecution stated that, investigation disclosed that, in July 2025, John Lamptey attacked the complainant and subjected her to physical beatings.

It said, John Lamptey further inserted pepper into her private part and forcibly had sexual intercourse with her.

The Prosecution stated that, the first accused person took complainant’s mobile plone and their 2 year-old child from her.

The Compiminant, it said, escaped from the matrimonial home and sought refuge from her relatives.

According to the Prosecution, on November 15, 2025, the first accused called the complainant that their two year-old child was sick and that she must come home and take care of him.

It said, the next day, November 16,at about 9:00pm, the complainant returned and realised that their child was not sick as the first accused had portrayed.

It was the case of the Prosecution that, on November 17, at about 7:00am, the complainant began packing her clothes to leave the house.

It said, the first Accused upon realising that, took the clothes from the complainant on grounds that, he bought them himself and tore them.

The Prosecution said, the first accused locked the door and went ahead to tear the complainant’s dress, waist beads and stripped her naked.

He, then, threatened her with words to wit “you think I will leave you to go like that, I am going to kill you, I set a trap for you to come and will bury you at the cemetery behind us”

This he said l, led to a quarrel and the first accused person attacked and assaulted the complainant “pitilessly with an aluminum mop stick and a slipper.”

He again, went ahead for a cutlass and asked the complainant to stretch her hands for him to cut them off but his brother, one Okraku rushed in for the cutlass.

The first accused person again went into the kitchen in search of “something and the complainant who was still naked rushed out of the room for her dear life.”

It said, the first accused person upon seeing that the complainant, went for PVC Pipe and beat her mercilessly, as shown in the video, an act that is cruel, inhumane or degrading treatment or punishment.

It said, the Complainant out of fear fled out from the house after the incident and went into hiding.

Grace Lamptey, the second accused after the arrest of the first accused confronted the witness who posted the viral video and threatened her life with words to wit “I give you three days, you will die” and she was arrested.

On November 20, the Complainant returned from her hideout and was medically examined together with a clinical psychologist.

The two accused were cautioned and after investigations, they were charged and arraigned.
