Mfantsipim unveils infrastructure transformation agenda for 150th anniversary

Mfantsipim School, Ghana’s oldest secondary institution, has unveiled an ambitious portfolio of transformative infrastructure projects aimed at modernizing the historic institution’s facilities as it prepares to mark 150 years of educational excellence.

The comprehensive transformation plan includes the upgrade of residential and academic facilities, expansion of STEM and digital learning infrastructure, improvement of sports facilities, establishment of a museum to preserve the school’s 150-year history, and construction of a commemorative monument to mark the sesquicentennial milestone.

To mobilize resources for these high-impact legacy projects, the 150th Anniversary Planning Committee has launched a nationwide mobile money fundraising campaign with a dedicated shortcode accessible across all mobile networks, including MTN, Telecel, and AirtelTigo.

The fundraising platform, designed to facilitate grassroots giving, allows alumni, staff, students, and well-wishers to contribute regardless of their location. The shortcode deliberately references the school’s founding year and forms part of a wider strategy to enable broad public participation in the sesquicentennial celebrations.

Captain John Yamoah, Chairman of the 150th Anniversary Planning Committee, emphasized the national significance of the milestone during a pre-launch press briefing in Accra. “This sesquicentennial is more than a school anniversary; it is a national celebration of 150 years of secondary school education in Ghana. For over a century and a half, Mfantsipim has shaped generations of leaders, statesmen, professionals, academics, and sportsmen who have served Ghana and the world with distinction,” he stated.

Professor Ernest Kofi Davis, Director General of the Ghana Education Service and an alumnus of the institution, lauded Mfantsipim’s enduring contribution to Ghana’s educational landscape. “Mfantsipim stands as a beacon of excellence and a model for secondary education in Ghana. Its values, achievements, and enduring legacy provide a powerful lens through which we can assess the journey of secondary education in Ghana,” Prof. Davis noted at the briefing.

The legacy projects represent a significant investment in the future of one of Ghana’s most prestigious educational institutions, ensuring that Mfantsipim’s infrastructure matches its academic reputation as it enters its next 150 years.

The year-long celebration, themed “A Legacy of Excellence, Leadership and Service to Inspire the Future,” will run from February through November 2026. The official launch is scheduled for April 11, 2026, at the Accra International Conference Centre, where Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang is expected to attend as Special Guest.

The sesquicentennial festivities will culminate in a special two-week programme from November 4 to 15, reaching its peak with the Grand Anniversary Durbar on November 14. President John Dramani Mahama, the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and Osabarima Kwesi Atta II, Omanhene of the Oguaa Traditional Area, are expected to grace the grand durbar.

Additional activities planned include the unveiling of anniversary cloth and songs, a lecture series, homecoming events, community outreach programmes, inter-schools sports competitions, and a Night of Awards to honour distinguished alumni, staff, and contributors to Ghana’s pre-tertiary education sector.

Alumni and well-wishers can contribute to the legacy projects by dialing *920*1876# on any mobile network and following the on-screen prompts.
