The Minority in parliament has questioned the commitment of government and security agencies in fighting activities of landguards in the country.
The Chief Director for the Ministry for Lands and Natural Resources Prof. Patrick Agbesinyale said this during a meeting with the Lands and Forestry Committee in Parliament.
He said his Ministry, the Police and the Military engage land guards to reclaim and protect their lands at a fee.
Prof. Agbesinyale further disclosed that the activities of these land guards have resulted in deaths which were kept away from the public.
The deputy ranking member for the committee on Lands and Forestry, Alhassan Suhuyini after expressing shock at the development disclosed that he ha’s filed an urgent question to summon the sector Minister, Samuel Abu Jinapor to Parliament.
“So it came to as members of the Minority on the Committee, when in our engagement with the Ministry Land and Natural Resources, the Chief Director shockingly said that the Ministry has resorted to engaging a land guard to retrieve and protect the government lands.
“Mind you these are lands that were held on behalf of the people of Ghana, vested in the President to protect. I am sure that the framers of the Constitution are aware that the President is the Commander in Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces and seized with the capacity to ensure that these lands are protected for communal use. That is why the lands are vested in the President and the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources is the Ministry tasked with the responsibility of overseeing the lands,” he stated.
