The Minority in Parliament has petitioned the Dean of the Diplomatic Corps, Maher Kheir, and President John Dramani Mahama over violence during the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun held on Friday, July 11, 2025.
The petition, delivered on Thursday, July 24, raises alarm over what the Minority describes as growing political intimidation and electoral irregularities.
After presenting their concerns to the diplomatic community, the group proceeded to the Jubilee House to submit a similar petition to President Mahama.
The Minority, just moments before Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson was scheduled to deliver the 2025 Mid-Year Budget Review, staged a walkout.
Leading the walkout, Minority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh addressed the House, requesting permission to raise what he called an urgent national concern.
Citing the violence that disrupted the Ablekuma North rerun on July 11, he emphasized that the House could not carry on with regular business while the issue remained unresolved.
“Mr. Speaker, with all due respect, I will not defy your authority on any day,” he said. “But we have lined up a number of activities to back our demands, and to the extent that these acts of violence have not been atoned for, we cannot be part of the presentation of the Mid-Year Budget. To that extent, we are exiting the chamber and cannot be part of this process.”
Speaker Alban Bagbin acknowledged the gravity of the concerns raised and suggested that the House schedule a day to debate the issue of electoral violence.
Nevertheless, the Minority MPs followed through with their decision and exited the chamber in protest.
