A group of Minority Members of Parliament on Thursday staged a march to the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) in protest of what they described as the unfair detention of New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi.
Led by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the MPs said their action was meant to register their disapproval of EOCO’s handling of the matter and to show solidarity with their party colleague, who has remained in custody since his arrest on May 27, 2025.
Addressing the media before the march, Afenyo-Markin called on EOCO to conduct its investigations within the confines of the law and to treat all individuals with dignity regardless of political affiliation. He noted that while the fight against corruption is necessary, justice and due process must not be compromised.
Wontumi is under investigation in relation to alleged financial misconduct linked to EXIMBANK. EOCO has reportedly set bail at GHS50 million with two sureties—a condition the Minority has described as excessive and impractical.
The Minority Leader argued that the bail terms effectively deny Wontumi the chance to regain his freedom and questioned the feasibility of meeting such requirements.

He reaffirmed the Minority’s commitment to continuing their protest, including plans to abstain from parliamentary business in support of their colleague. He also appealed to all lawmakers to stand together in demanding accountability and fairness in the conduct of state institutions.
According to Afenyo-Markin, the action is not to obstruct the work of EOCO, but to remind it and other investigative bodies that justice must be dispensed without bias or political influence.
