MobileMoney LTD, a subsidiary of MTN Ghana, has refuted claims circulating on social media that its systems were compromised, resulting in unauthorised withdrawals from a customer’s wallet.
The allegations surfaced after a customer posted online accusing the company of failing to secure her funds. In response, MobileMoney LTD released a press statement on April 14, 2025, confirming that a thorough internal investigation had been conducted and that no breach of its systems had occurred.
“Our findings suggest that the customer engaged with third parties, which led to her unknowingly compromising her phone’s security,” the company stated. It identified the incident as a case of social engineering a tactic used by fraudsters to deceive individuals into disclosing sensitive information such as one-time passwords (OTPs) and PINs.
MobileMoney LTD emphasized that customer security remains a top priority and reassured the public of its robust protective measures. “We continue to implement strong security protocols and educate customers on the importance of safeguarding their personal information,” the statement read.
The company urged users never to share their security credentials, including OTPs and PINs, even with individuals claiming to be MTN staff.
Launched in 2009, MobileMoney LTD currently serves over 17 million subscribers across Ghana, offering services that span mobile payments, remittances, savings, loans, and insurance all aimed at driving financial inclusion and empowerment.
MobileMoney LTD concluded its statement with a call for customer vigilance and reaffirmed its dedication to ensuring a secure mobile money experience for all.
