The National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons (NACSA) has declared the upcoming Akwatia Constituency by-election a no-go area for weapons, warning political actors, party supporters, and the general public to refrain from any actions that could incite or promote violence.
In a press release dated August 24, 2025, NACSA emphasized that the display and use of both lethal and non-lethal weapons, including firearms, improvised weapons, tasers, pepper spray, knives, and machetes, will not be tolerated. The Commission cautioned that anyone found with any form of weapon will be promptly arrested and prosecuted.
According to NACSA, Ghana’s democracy has made significant progress and stands as a beacon of peace and stability in the sub-region. However, the Commission expressed concern over politically motivated violence, often fueled by inflammatory rhetoric and the unlawful possession of firearms during elections, which threatens to undermine peace and stability.
NACSA therefore urged politicians and party leaders to set a positive example by encouraging their supporters to express their political choices lawfully and peacefully. It stressed that the use of arms or threats of violence must never be tolerated as a means of gaining political advantage.
The Commission further assured the public of its collaboration with the Ghana Police Service, the Electoral Commission, the National Security Council, Civil Society Organizations, and other partners to monitor the by-election and ensure a peaceful process.

Executive Secretary of NACSA, Dr. Adam A. A. Bonaa, reiterated the Commission’s commitment to supporting a safe and secure electoral environment before, during, and after the Akwatia by-election.
The Akwatia parliamentary seat became unexpectedly vacant following the sudden death of its first-term MP, Ernest Yaw Kumi, on 7 July 2025, reportedly due to a brief illness and suspected cardiac issues.
