President John Dramani Mahama has declared Friday, July 10, and Saturday, July 11, 2026, as National General Cleaning Days in the seven regions affected by the recent floods, as part of efforts to mitigate the impact of flooding and improve environmental sanitation.

The exercise, which will be conducted under the theme, “Our Actions, Our Future: Cleaning Ghana after the floods,” is being organised by the government through the Post-Flood Mitigation Committee to mobilise citizens to clean communities, protect the environment, and help prevent future flood disasters.

In a statement issued on Monday, July 6, by the Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the government urged all Ghanaians to actively participate in what it described as a critical national exercise.

As part of the initiative, President Mahama has directed all government appointees, including Ministers of State, Chief Executive Officers of state institutions, Members of Parliament, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), and Heads of Public Institutions, to leave their offices and personally lead cleanup activities alongside residents in their respective communities.

According to the statement, personnel from the security agencies, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs), and waste management companies will begin the cleanup exercise on Friday, July 10. The exercise will be expanded on Saturday, July 11, when members of the public join the security services and assemblies.

The nationwide exercise will focus on desilting choked drains to improve the free flow of water ahead of the rainy season, sweeping and clearing sand, weeds and debris from major roads and highways, and cleaning public spaces, including markets, lorry parks, recreational parks, and communal waste collection points.

The Presidency described the exercise as a critical intervention and a wake-up call for the nation, noting that years of indiscriminate littering and plastic pollution have blocked drainage systems, contributing to devastating but preventable floods that have destroyed property and claimed lives.

To support the exercise, all MMDAs have been directed to work closely with waste management companies to provide adequate logistics, including waste collection trucks, gloves, shovels, and other cleaning equipment at designated locations.

The assemblies have also been instructed to ensure that all silt and refuse collected during the exercise are immediately evacuated to prevent them from being washed back into drains.

The government called on Ghanaians to demonstrate unity and community spirit by participating fully in the exercise to help build cleaner and safer communities.

“Protect your home, protect your neighbour, and let us clean our beloved homeland. Clean Ghana, Save Lives,” the statement said.
