The New Juaben South Constituency Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Salasie Amuzu, has accused the Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, of instigating disturbances in the ongoing Akwatia by-election.
According to Mr. Amuzu, the party’s election monitoring team has observed the Minority Leader moving around the constituency with alleged vigilantes who have been engaging in acts of intimidation against NDC supporters. He alleged that Afenyo-Markin and his team had even gone as far as removing the party’s posters at its office in the area.
“It is quite unfortunate that a vulnerable member like Afenyo-Markin is bringing his thugs to come and attack the good people of Akwatia. Since morning, everything has been peaceful until he came here with his convoy and started intimidating our people. I am calling on the IGP and national security to call him to order,” he said.
The NDC chairman warned that if the situation is not addressed immediately, his party may be compelled to respond in ways that could disturb the peace of the constituency.
“We want this exercise to end peacefully. But if we are forced to also react, it will not bring good news to the people of Akwatia. That is why I am pleading with the security agencies to intervene,” he added.
Mr. Amuzu further described the conduct of the Minority Leader as unbecoming of a senior legislator, stressing that it was wrong for him to enter another constituency and allegedly engage in intimidation.
“The NPP has banned vigilantism, so why should a Member of Parliament, and more so the Minority Leader, come here with vigilantes to cause trouble? He should behave like a leader and respect the peace of this community,” he stated.
The police in the constituency, according to him, had to intervene earlier to calm tensions after reported clashes between NDC supporters and individuals allegedly aligned with the Minority Leader’s convoy.
The NDC says it will continue to monitor the situation but insists it is up to the security agencies to ensure that the electoral process remains peaceful.
