The Deputy National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Godwin Ako Gunn, says the governing party believes it has made significant progress in its first year in office despite some expectations not yet being fully met.
Speaking on Morning Starr with Naa Dedei Tettey, Gunn said the administration led by John Dramani Mahama entered office prepared for the economic challenges it inherited.
“So far, it’s been a good year and we knew the hurdles ahead of us before contesting… thankfully we have a president who had been in office before and came in knowing what is at stake,” he said.
According to him, the government deliberately chose not to spend its early months blaming the previous administration but rather focused on stabilizing the economy.
“We decided to come in, hold the bull by the horn and turn things around. One year down the line, we can confidently say that it’s been a good year.”
Gunn argued that the country had inherited what he described as a severely weakened economy but that the government had managed to begin reversing the situation within a short period.
“We had inherited a very junk economy. We knew we were going to turn it around, but before God and man, some of us didn’t know that we could do it in just a year.”
However, he acknowledged that not all public expectations have been satisfied, particularly regarding employment and accountability.
“Not all expectations… have been met. Especially when it comes to issues of jobs… the expectation of our people have not fully been met.”
