Dr. Frank Amoakohene, the Ashanti Regional Secretary for the National Democratic Congress, claims that a viral video suggesting voters must thumbprint the ballot paper eight times to vote for the NDC flag bearer is a deliberate attempt to misinform and mislead the people.
This comes on the back of a man in a viral video spreading misinformation about Ghana’s voting process on Wontumi FM.
Speaking on Morning Starr, with Naa Dedei Tettey on Monday, Dr. Amoakohene noted that such false information could confuse voters and undermine the electoral process. He also stated that he thinks it is a deliberate attempt to damage public perception and erode election integrity.
“A brief remark on it is that the evil men do live after them and for the same reason we think of it as a deliberate electoral misinformation,” Dr. Amoakohene stated.
Dr. Amoakohene also emphasized the need for institutions specifically the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) responsible for educating the electorates to ensure that they rightly inform the public and lay out clear guidelines that can correct misinformation.
“The institutions of the Republic of Ghana are supposed to be notified because the NCCE has a unique responsibility. So the institutions that are mandated to ensure that the right things are done in our body politics have been notified including the National Commission for Civic Education. They are all and out in electoral times preaching for all the peace and all the issues. These are deliberate attempts to only misinform the public. So we are expecting them to take action,” he expressed.
He also stressed the need to uphold ethical standards in the electoral process. He said, “But we are bound to be ethical in our body politics. Unless we want a breakdown of the ethics that govern the way and manner we do our politics in this country. Or do we want to be ruthless or lawless?”
Dr. Amoakohene also added, “But we are bound to be ethical so that at the end of the day when the young ones are learning from us, they will learn it in the right context and a very proper context. So we expect the NCCE to take action and call them to order.”
