New Juaben S.: Bonya residents cut off whenever it rains

The deplorable condition of roads in the New Juaben South Municipality continues to deteriorate.

Commuters in many sub-communities in the municipality including Bonya, Agavanya, Mile 50, Trom, Korle, Acheampong, Apenkwa, and Two -Streams continue to gnash their teeth whenever travelling on roads linking their communities to the central business city of the Regional Capital, Koforidua.

One of such communities with very terrible road is Bonya. The highly populated developing community is cut off whenever there is a heavy downpour.

A recent rainfall once again caused severe flooding on the road.

Residents were compelled to walk through seeped water that flooded portion of the road made it impossible for vehicles to cross.

“As you can see, we are all walking through the floods to cross to the school side before we can get a taxi. Whenever it rains no car comes here. We are cut off completely. The water comes from a mountain at the side but the bridge is too small to contain so it ended up on the road” A resident, Patrick Ayeh lamented

Another resident, Favour Tsormana angrily stated “from here to the regional capital is just 15 minutes drive but it takes us 45 minutes. Are we not Ghanaians. Even the situation has been salvaged through communal labour having filed the large muddy holes with stones and gravels. It was worst”

Residents including market woman and pupils risk their lives to walk through the flooded portion of the only road that connects Bonya from Acheampong community.

Parents had to carry their children shoulder high to cross to attend Schools and meet them halfway after school to carry them back home to avoid drowning.

The lives of pupils in school buses are put in danger whenever their drivers’ force to cross as engines of their vehicles sometimes go off in the middle of the floodwaters and the vehicles had to be quickly pushed out of the floods to avert drowning.

“whenever it rains parents have to carry their children to cross this flooded portion of the road. When it rains in th3 afternoon and you are at work you have to call someone in the house to beg him or her to meet your child and help to cross. we are suffering ” a Parent lamented

Residents want their road rehabilitated whiles the bridge is reconstructed with culverts.

During the recent “Meet the Press series “held, the Municipal Chief Executive for New Juaben South, Isaac Appaw Gyasi said some of the town roads are being rehabilitated whiles others are in the process of being awarded on contract but urged residents to pay their property rates first.

The Eastern Regional Minister Eric Kwakye Darfuor has for the meantime begged residents of the region agitating over bad roads to exercise maximum restraint since the situation of deplorable roads is a nationwide problem which government is gradually addressing.
