The National Labour Commission (NLC) has directed the Senior Staff Association – Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG), the Technical University Administrators Association of Ghana (TUAAG), and the Federation of Universities Senior Staff Association of Ghana (FUSSAG) to immediately call off their ongoing strike action.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, May 21, the Commission cited its powers under Section 139 (1)(d) of the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651), to issue the directive following the unions’ failure to comply with its earlier instruction to suspend the industrial action pending resolution.
According to the NLC, it received notice from the unions on May 12, 2025, of their intention to embark on strike over what they described as the government’s failure to implement agreed conditions of service signed on November 12, 2024. In response, the Commission summoned both the unions and government representatives to a hearing scheduled for May 21.
The statement noted that while representatives from FUSSAG and TUAAG appeared before the Commission, the SSA-UoG was absent. Officials from the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC), and the Ministry of Finance were also in attendance.
However, the Commission was informed during the hearing that the unions had gone ahead with the strike despite being directed to stay the action. This, the NLC stated, was confirmed by a press release issued by the union leaders dated the same day of the hearing, May 21.
As a result, the Commission declined to proceed with the hearing, citing Section 161 of the Labour Act, which bars hearings if the complainant parties are actively engaged in a strike that flouts the Commission’s directives.
The NLC emphasized that it would only proceed with the matter once the unions call off the strike and officially inform the Commission of their compliance.
