NPP, NDC hardly explore possibilities to serve the interest of the nation – Dr. Amakye-Boateng

Political Scientist, Dr. Kwasi Amakye-Boateng has asserted that political parties have long since served their own interests.

This comes on the back of Speaker of Parliament, Alban Kingsford Bagbin adjourning parliament once again due to the failure of the NPP Members of Parliament to attend the session on Thursday, November 7 at the Accra International Conference Centre.

The office of the Speaker of Parliament released a statement calling for the resumption of parliament. This follows the indefinite adjournment of parliamentary proceedings on October 22, 2024.

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin announced the indefinite adjournment of parliament due to the exchanges between lawmakers from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) regarding which caucus held the Majority.

Although the recall of parliament was initiated by the NPP Caucus, they failed to attend the session.
However, in an interview on Starr Today with Joshua Kodjo Mensah, Dr Amakye-Boateng expressed that he was not surprised by yesterday’s parliamentary developments.

He explained that in Ghana’s political history, the relationship between the two political parties has been driven by partisan interests instead of exploring ways to advance national interests.

“One would have been surprised but you know following yesterday’s engagement we got an understanding that things were not properly sorted out at that level and that if anything were to happen then it would have to happen between the two political parties. But as it is with our politics, generally in Ghana’s political history and particularly in the fourth republic the relationship between the two political parties has not been that of a situation where they explore possibilities to serve the interest of the nation. The parties have always been there to serve their own interest, given that understanding, the nature of our politics is unnecessarily conflictual, and differently, you know I did not expect anything new to happen. I am not at all surprised by what has happened today,” he stated.

He further stated that the Speaker should not be blamed for adjourning parliament, since he lacked the necessary quorum to conduct parliament business.
