NPP questions NPC’s silence over alleged threats to Afenyo-Markin by NDC’s Azorka

The NPP has criticized the National Peace Council for staying silent after alleged threats against Afenyo-Markin during the Akwatia by-election.

The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has expressed shock at what it describes as the continued silence of the National Peace Council (NPC) in the wake of alleged assaults and threats made against Minority Leader, Osahen Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, by the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) First National Vice Chairman, Chief Sofo Azorka.

The incident reportedly occurred during a by-election in Akwatia on September 2, where a viral video captured Chief Azorka allegedly threatening the Effutu MP. According to the NPP, not only was Afenyo-Markin targeted, but similar threats were also directed at National Organizer, Henry Nana Boakye, and MP for Nsawam-Adoagyiri, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, by Chief Azorka and Alhaji Abdul Wahab Amadu, the Abuakwa North Constituency Communication Officer of the NDC.

Speaking on Starr Today with Tutuwaa Danso, Second Deputy Minority Whip and MP for Weija-Gbawe, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, condemned what he described as a worrying culture of silence from institutions mandated to uphold peace.

“It is in the DNA of the NDC to engage in acts of violence. Even the President has described them as a revolutionary party, and therefore their actions and inactions often reflect that nature.” He stated.

He also expressed his shock at the silence of the National Peace Council, civil society organizations (CSOs), and many esteemed institutions, as well as well-meaning Ghanaians, “who have not taken the time to strongly condemn this recent act of violence.”

“As we speak, around 30 people have reportedly died in an incident in the northern part of the country along the Black Volta area. Violence, regardless of where it originates; be it from the NPP, CPP, GCPO, or the NDC; must be condemned at all material times. The culture of silence on such matters only emboldens further unrest.” He added.
