The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has accused senior officials of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) of issuing death threats and carrying out acts of violence against its members, vowing to seek immediate police intervention.
This was announced in a statement signed by General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong on Wednesday, September 3.
The opposition party alleged that NDC’s First National Vice Chairman, Chief Sofo Azorka, and Abuakwa North Constituency Communications Officer, Alhaji Abdul Wahab Amadu, threatened Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye, and Nsawam-Adoagyiri MP Frank Annoh-Dompreh.
The NPP further claimed that Chief Azorka and his associates physically attacked its 3rd National Vice Chairman, Alhaji Osman Masawudu, describing the incident as “unprovoked, reckless and damaging to Ghana’s democratic credentials.”
“Such violent conduct by no mean a person than a National Officer of the ruling party and a constituency officer diminishes the gains of our democracy and has the potential to create further insecurity in the country in the face of Ghana’s recent decline in the Global Peace Index Ranking,” the statement said.
The NPP announced that it will file a formal complaint with the Ghana Police Service and urged the Inspector-General of Police to order the arrest and prosecution of those implicated, including individuals captured in viral videos circulating on social media.
The party insisted that the alleged threats and assaults must not go unpunished, warning that failure to act decisively could set a dangerous precedent for Ghana’s political environment.
