NPP polls: Winning election by buying votes illegal – Amoako Baah

The former head of the political science department at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Dr. Amoako Baah has stated that winning election by vote buying constitutes illegality.

Speaking on Morning Starr with Francis Abban Morning, Mr. Baah indicated that the issue of voting in the current political environment is destroying the country.

“If you engage in an illegality can that be considered as the final act? If you engaged in an illegality, why are you bordering about the subsequent events for what? The whole thing is illegal, that is what they did.

“And we are still talking about who is going to be the running mate and what percentage for what? It is irrelevant because the whole thing is staged,” Mr. Amoako Baah stated.

He continued: “If I was surprised at all it is the number of votes Kennedy got. Because if you are dealing with delegates it is money and who has more money than the government? Some people mention what they got from the Vice President Ghc400 support. The delegates were complaining that some of the chairmen got GHc1200 so they were upset. See what it has generated into, more money and that is what I am talking about. We are destroying the country.”

Background

A Delegate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the ongoing Flagbearer election at Krowor Constituency in the Greater Accra Region has disclosed that he was given two heavy envelopes after casting his ballot.

Samed Nuhu, a polling station executive in an interview alleged that he received the envelopes from the camps of both Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and Ken Agyapong.

“The process is cool so far, there is no problem here. I have cast my vote and I have received my envelope. I took envelopes from both the Bawumia and Ken Agyapong camp and I needed to take that money. I didn’t force myself to get, it was just given to me when I had not demanded for it. In fact, both envelopes are heavy.”

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia was on Saturday, November 4, 2023 elected the Presidential candidate of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) to lead the party to the 2024 general election.

He polled 118,210 votes representing in the Presidential primary held across the country on Saturday, November 4, 2023, which had about 210,000 delegates casting their ballot.

His closest contender, Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Ken Agyapong polled 71, 996 votes.

The other contestants, former Minister for Food and Agriculture, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto and former Member of Parliament for Mampong, Francis Addai Nimoh polled 1,459 and 781 votes respectively.

Following his election, Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia will go head-to-head with ex-President John Dramani Mahama, who secured the endorsement of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) earlier this year.
