Former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Paul Awentami Afoko, has cautioned the party against its decision to hold presidential primaries in January 2026, describing the move as a major strategic error.
Speaking on Starr Chat with Bola Ray on Thursday, September 4, Afoko explained that the party’s tradition of renewal has always followed a structured cycle that begins at the polling station level and builds up to the national level before the selection of a flagbearer.
“I think that the party is making a big mistake going for presidential primaries in January. Two reasons: One, normally this party goes through a renewal cycle every four years and that renewal starts from the polling stations all the way up. And after the national executive is in place, then you have presidential primaries,” Afoko noted.

While raising concerns about the timing, Afoko was quick to emphasize that he holds no personal preference in the upcoming contest.

“I don’t have a favorite when it comes to who I think will become the flagbearer of the NPP. I wish them well, but I don’t have a favorite,” he stated.
