The campaign team of Dr. Bryan Acheampong has expressed disappointment following defeat in the NPP 2026 presidential primaries, which saw former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia elected as the party’s flagbearer ahead of the 2028 general elections.
Speaking on Morning Starr with Naa Dedei Tettey, Eric Amoako Twum, spokesperson for Dr. Acheampong, said while the team is “still a bit disappointed because we were expecting to win… the delegates have spoken. They’ve chosen His Excellency Dr. Mahmoud Bamiya to lead a party at this time.”
He stressed the importance of rallying behind the elected flagbearer: “The most important thing is to all rally behind the candidate that has been chosen by the party so that we can sort of prosecute the campaign come 2028.”
On the campaign strategy and messaging, Mr. Twum highlighted the team’s approach to the delegates.
“We believe strongly that as we went into the election… there was a certain convergence of thought that for every political party, the sole aim should be winning elections when you enter elections.”
He also called for genuine reconciliation within the party to strengthen cohesion.
“The party would have to do a proper, sincere, genuine reconciliation and then unite… if you want to apply discipline… it should be done in a manner that is fair for everybody to understand that as a political party, it’s supposed to be governed by rules and regulations.”
The NPP primaries, held on Saturday, January 31, 2026, witnessed a massive turnout of delegates nationwide, with over 196,000 votes cast at more than 300 polling centres.
Out of 195,901 valid votes, Bawumia secured 110,643 votes (56.48%).
