The Kennedy Ohene Agyapong campaign team has expressed surprise over some of the outcomes of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential primaries, particularly in the Volta and Greater Accra regions.
The primaries, held on Saturday, January 31, 2026, produced unexpected results in several parts of the country, with Dr. Bryan Acheampong winning the majority of constituencies in the Volta Region—an area the Ken Agyapong camp believed leaned in its favour.
Charles Forson, the Member of Parliament for Tema Central and a member of the Ken Agyapong campaign team, said the results showed that delegate behaviour can defy political calculations.
Speaking on Morning Starr with Naa Dedei Tettey, Forson said, “So sometimes, what we think, from a strategic point of view, isn’t what the delegates may have thought of. So I believe there were a lot of surprises. I mean, I must say, there were just a lot of too many surprises.”
He singled out the Volta and Greater Accra regions as key examples of the unexpected shifts.
“I knew we were going to win Volta, maybe Greater Accra and other regions. But elections, it’s not about fearing delegates, but it’s elections. And maybe people had a different mindset in going to vote for the candidate that we all elected on Friday, on Saturday,” Forson explained.
He said the outcome underscores the unpredictability of internal party contests and signals the need for deeper reflection as the party reorganises ahead of the 2028 general elections.
