One person has died and three others sustained injuries following a head-on collision between a tipper truck and a fuel tanker on the Accra–Tema Motorway late Monday night.
The crash, which occurred between Saka Saka Park and Tanink Ghana, triggered a massive fire outbreak and prompted an extensive emergency response involving the Ghana National Fire Service and other security agencies.
According to the Ghana National Fire Service, the accident involved a tipper truck loaded with timber and a fuel tanker carrying approximately 54,000 litres of fuel.
The impact of the collision caused the fuel tanker to burst into flames, sending thick plumes of smoke into the night sky and posing a significant threat to motorists and nearby communities.
Firefighters were dispatched to the scene at 11:50 p.m. and arrived within minutes to begin firefighting operations. Additional fire appliances and personnel from the Ashaiman and Industrial Area fire stations were later deployed to assist in containing the blaze.
The fire was brought under control shortly before 1:00 a.m. and was completely extinguished by 1:44 a.m., preventing further damage and potential explosions.
Following the firefighting operation, rescue teams commenced efforts to extract a trapped victim from the wreckage.
Three injured persons were subsequently transported to the Tema General Hospital for treatment, while one person was confirmed dead. The deceased’s body was later recovered and handed over to the police for further investigation.
The Fire Service disclosed that 26 tyres on the fuel tanker were completely destroyed by the fire, while an undetermined quantity of fuel was lost in the incident.
Authorities are yet to determine the cause of the collision as investigations continue.
