Alexander Afenyo-Markin, Minority Leader in Parliament, has described opposition as “painful and lonely,” urging New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential aspirants to prioritize unity ahead of the party’s primaries.
Speaking at the signing of a Peace Pact for the NPP primaries on Thursday, January 22, he stressed the importance of cohesion to reclaim power in the 2028 general elections.
“I say that opposition is painful and lonely. Good friends don’t pick up calls. They ignore us and they find new friends,” Afenyo-Markin said, warning that division undermines the party’s chances of returning to government.

He called on the aspirants to rise above temporary emotions and work for long-term victory, “And when the contest is over, let us close ranks, lock arms and march forward together, stronger, wiser and united towards victory 2028. Our future depends on it. Our party depends on it. And Ghana is counting on us.”
All five NPP presidential aspirants – Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Kennedy Agyapong, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, and Kwabena Agyepong – signed the peace pact, committing to respect the electoral process and support the eventual winner.
The January 31, 2026, primary date was approved by the party’s National Executive Committee and National Council to allow sufficient time for campaigning and internal coordination ahead of the 2028 elections.
