More than 200 Persons with Disabilities working under the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) as Gender and Disability Desk Officers have appealed to the government to intervene over what they describe as unfair dismissal and unpaid salaries.
The workers say their contracts officially ended in September 2025, and despite submitting their details to District Directors for contract renewal and payment, most have not received any salaries or official communication from YEA management.
“This silence is painful and disrespectful. Many of us depend on this work to support our families and maintain our dignity. Taking away our jobs without explanation or payment leaves us frustrated, helpless, and abandoned,” the group said in a statement.
The affected staff also highlighted the government’s stated commitment to disability inclusion, particularly citing remarks made by President John Dramani Mahama during the launch of the Free Tertiary Education Policy for Persons with Disabilities.
The President had said, “This initiative is not an act of charity. It is an act of justice and equality. It is a strategic investment in Ghana’s most valuable resource – its people.”
He further added, “When we exclude, we waste talent. But when we include and empower, we multiply national progress.”
The workers argue that these promises must translate into tangible support.
“The Free Tertiary Education Policy is meant to equip Persons with Disabilities for meaningful employment, not to have us graduate and remain jobless,” they said.
In their appeal, the staff called on President Mahama, the Minister for Youth Development and Empowerment, and the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection to ensure justice, fairness, and transparency.
Their demands include immediate payment of all outstanding salaries, clear communication from YEA regarding their job status, and renewal of contracts in line with the government’s 5% employment inclusion policy.
The group emphasized that they are “not asking for charity. We are demanding fairness, respect, and the right to work with dignity – the same rights every Ghanaian worker deserves.”
