Mrs Rebecca Akufo-Addo has said the current difficulties faced by Ghanaians require a competent leader like her husband Nana Akufo-Addo to fix them.

Campaigning in the Ablekuma Central and Ayawaso North constituencies in the Greater Accra region, she said the electorate can trust the former Foreign Affairs Minister since he also has the men and women to rule the nation effectively.

Mrs. Akufo-Addo noted change is inevitable come December 7.

Accompanied by the parliamentary candidate of Ablekuma Central constituency, Ebenezer Nii Narh Nartey, Mrs Akufo-Addo, called on the chief of Samara-line Chief Issu Something where she assured them that the NPP has no business in deporting them.

“My husband has always fought for individual rights and freedoms and will never infringe on the human rights of anyone. Again, be assured that Nana Addo who is committed to improving the lives of all Ghanaians, regardless of tribe, religion, gender or class, will be a father for all,” Mrs. Akufo-Addo said.

At the Sukura and Zongo markets in Ablekuma Central, Mrs Akufo-Addo, interacted with market women, stressing Nana Addo and the NPP will fix the economy and make the business environment better for their businesses to thrive.

“You know that as women we are the major beneficiaries of an improved NHIS, free maternal healthcare and free quality SHS, so on December 7, vote for these social interventions for you and your children; vote for Nana Akufo-Addo and the NPP,” she emphasised.

Mrs Akufo-Addo also met drivers at the Kaneshie-Dansoman and Takoradi stations.

She stated: “My husband is a man of peace and someone you can trust. Don’t believe those who say the Zongo Development fund is a mere campaign talk. He means it, so give him the opportunity to prove to you, he is a man of his words”.

Nyantakyi’s $2m suit against Multimedia adjourned

The President of Ghana Football Association’s $2 million defamatory suit against the Multimedia Group and two other journalists has been adjourned to Tuesday, November 29, 2016.

This is because the defendants’ counsel refused to file their defence after hearing was opened on Tuesday.

According to the counsel for the defendants, his clients have apologized for defaming the Ghana FA Boss and FIFA Council member Kwesi Nyantakyi hence deciding not to file for the defense.

He argued that the counsel for the plaintiff should read the apology along with the plaintiff and if they are dissatisfied, he will then file for defense for the full hearing of the case.

Counsel for the defendants (Songo, Abatay and Multimedia) pleaded with the court that the due process of issuing an apology to the Ghana FA Boss Nyantakyi has been followed and that they expect the plaintiffs’ counsel to acknowledge that.

Counsel for the plaintiff prayed the court that his chamber has not seen the said apology being alluded by the counsel for the defendants insisting, the hearing must start.

But the counsel for the defendants rebutted that the apology was rendered with the consent of a senior member in the chamber of the counsel for the plaintiff.

Both parties agreed that the next date of sitting should be November 29, 2016.

Another 20% said Ghana are often at their best when they have their backs against the wall and so they could still bounce back to advance to the next World Cup.

With 10% believing in ‘anything can happen’ adage, saying Africa football is not predictable when it comes to World Cup finalists.

Nima clashes: Blame Police – Mahama

Scenes in front of Akufo-Addo's house during the melee

President John Mahama has blamed the Nima Police for the clashes that ensued between members of the NDC and the security detail of the NPP flagbearer in front of his Nima residence Sunday morning.

According to the President, the Police should have anticipated the situation and map out strategies to avert it.

Supporters of the NDC on a health walk allegedly threw stones into Akufo-Addo’s house leading to gun shots from the flagbearer’s security detail to ward off the supporters.

The development has been condemned by both the US and UK envoys in Ghana.

Addressing labour unions in Accra Tuesday, Mr. Mahama said the situation was avoidable if the Police had acted right.

“Only last Saturday we almost had a clash which was unfortunate, if any of those firearms had been fired and someone had dropped dead it would have been a completely different story. I think we should be preventive enough in our actions to prevent such things…I think that the police at Nima should have been better briefed knowing that this group was passing through and then we should have taken appropriate safeguards to ensure that such a thing doesn’t happen,” he stated.

He also assured the labour unions that he will never be the source of conflict in the Ghana.

“By my nature I don’t encourage violence, I will never encourage violence so if any such thing happen, it will not be that I provoked it”.

Meanwhile, the NPP flagbearer has said the incident will not intimidate him and his supporters.

“Let the President and his army of propaganda warriors be assured that they would not succeed in their intimidation and deliberate propaganda mongering against the NPP and I.

“We shall continue to believe in Ghana. We will muster the necessary courage to defend democratic Ghana and continue in our peaceful quest to win power in 2016 and bring back hope and opportunities to the people of Ghana, irrespective of their politics, creed, ethnicity, region, religion, age, gender or social status,” Nana Addo said in a statement.

Inesfly Africa supports AHISCO

Inesfly Africa, producers of insecticide paints and solutions, in their quest to support and rid secondary schools of bedbugs and other insects has once again extended a helping hand towards the Accra High School by donating buckets of paint.

The donation was to aid the school in giving a facelift to its structures as the first secondary school in Accra. The donation was in response to an appeal by the 1995 year group to support painting projects as part of activities marking this year’s AHISCO Homecoming celebration.

The donation, which was in line with the company’s corporate social responsibility, would help rid the structures that would be painted of insects, especially mosquitoes. Presenting the package consisting of 10 buckets of insecticide paints, Mr David Afugani, Sales Director of Inesfly Africa said they will continue to contribute their quota towards promoting education in Ghana.

He also commended the school for its immense contribution to human resource development in the country and declared the company’s commitment to continue to partner the school on educational projects.

Aside the donation, Mr Afugani announced to offer the school a special discount package on purchases. He explained that the company continues to support health and educational institutions in fighting insects, particularly mosquitoes and bedbugs.

“Our objective is to make schools free of bedbugs and mosquitoes to create a healthy environment for students and teachers,” he said.

Receiving the items, Mr. Thomas Armah, representative of the Old AHISCO Board, thanked the company for the kind gesture. He said the support would go a long way to ensure the success of the school’s painting project, which is part of a redevelopment plan for the school.

Ghanasco student bus, Headmistress car impounded over debt

A section of Ghanasco in Tamale

A court in Tamale in the Northern region has confiscated a student bus and the official vehicle of the headmistress of the Ghana Senior High School (Ghanasco) after the Ghana Education Service failed to pay up the salary arrears of a former headmaster of the school.

The late Lionel Mahama, headed the school circa 1997, dragged the Ghana Education Service to court accusing it of abusing his right including inappropriate dismissal and concealing his promotion letter away from him.

He was later reinstated as the headmaster following a CHRAJ order but authorities halted payment of his salaries. He sent the matter to court despite several failed attempts to get his benefits.

A High court in Tamale presided over by Justice Lawrence L. Mensah on April, 25 2013 cited ‘unjust treatment’ and ordered the full and immediate payment of all outstanding arrears to the late former headmaster.

The arrears went up to more than GH200, 000 compelling the late educationist to return the case to court but died shortly after presenting his claims to the court.

However, years after the court order, authorities of the education service failed to comply with the directives angering the court to order the confiscation of the assets.

Two Nissan Patrol vehicles belonging to the education service have also been confiscated.

A daughter of the late Mahama, Diana Awuni told StarrNews the family intend auctioning the four vehicles if authorities failed to pay up the debt.

“We have no alternative, we also need to survive in this difficult time because we went through a lot’ my old man went through a lot of hardship; it affected his health very well. The injustice he went through affected him, in fact he endured hardship. No pension has been up to now nothing and he died and left children. Four years after his death we can’t access anything, is that justice?” Diana lamented.

Starr News checks at the school have revealed stalled activities. Authorities of the school are now renting vehicles for teachers and students for events.

There is also a growing anger among teachers of the school as they question why the court jointly penalized the institution for a fallout solely committed by the Ghana Education Service.

Airtel Ghana CEO Quist inspires young coders

Founder of Ghana Code Club, Ernestina A. Appiah and Lucy Quist flanked by teachers, authorities and pupils of La Wireless Schoo

Airtel Ghana’s CEO Lucy Quist has encouraged pupils of La Wireless Cluster of Schools, who have signed up to learn coding and programming to use the knowledge and skills garnered to solve challenges in their communities.

She said this at the launch of a coding club for the school under the company’s Evolve with STEM initiative in partnership with the Ghana Code Club.

Thirty pupils from the school who have signed up for the club were being introduced to coding for the first time. They were taken through examples of technology solutions birthed through coding and programming.

Sharing her thoughts on the importance of introducing young people to STEM, Lucy Quist said “Empowering young people through STEM is one of the surest ways to guarantee a better future for them, our country and continent. STEM inspires curiosity in young people and empowers them to be problem solvers and innovators. These skill sets are critical for success in any profession.

At Airtel, we believe in empowering young people to fully realise their potential. This initiative, as part of our wider CSR programme, continues to shape minds and build the confidence of our future leaders to think outside the box and to question the status quo”.

She shared examples of young Ghanaians who have developed solutions, through coding, to solve the challenges that confront the country. She made references to Car Care, Bisa and Passco, all of which are mobile based applications.

She encouraged the pupils to believe in themselves and take inspiration from these examples as they progress in their coding and programming course.

The coding session was led by Ms. Ernestina Appiah from Ghana Code Club, a non-profit organization committed to exposing all elementary school kids especially girls to computer science activities in Ghana.

Children between the ages of 8-16 gain basic computing skills while learning to make their own games, animations and build their own websites.

Airtel Ghana recently commissioned a multipurpose state of the art Library and ICT centre which will be used for the coding and programming lessons for the La Wireless Cluster of Schools. The facility was sponsored under the company’s ‘School Adoption Programme.

In September 2016 the Centre for CSR West Africa recognized Lucy Quist for her dedication, commitment and leadership in driving an integrated and strategic CSR agenda for Airtel Ghana.

Airtel Ghana has won multiple awards for its CSR programme including recently being adjudged the ‘Best Corporate Social Responsibility Initiative’ at the Africa Carrier Awards held in Kampala, Uganda during the annual Capacity Conference.

Sabare: Mahama’s SHS “at cow grazing completion stage” – Bawumia

The vice presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has described one of the sites of the 123 community senior high schools being built by the Mahama administration as “a fertile cattle grazing ground.”

After visiting the Sabare Community Senior High School listed as number 81 on the list of 123 schools, Dr. Bawumia said there is “absolutely no work ongoing”.

In a Facebook post, Dr. Bawumia likened the Sabare School fiasco to the case of the five polyclinics the NDC noted in their manifesto to have constructed in the Western region but could not be verified.

The post reads “In the matter of ‘vanishing polyclinics’, another project which seems to have vanished is the Sabare Community Senior High School in the Zabzugu Constitue2121ncy of the Northern Region. This project was listed as Number 81 on the list of 123 Senior High Schools supposedly being constructed by the government and at ‘different stages of completion’.”

Dr. Bawumia explained that following the release of the list on September 29th by the Mahama government, he visited the supposed site of the School and presented pictorial evidence of what he saw.

“Following the release of the list on 29th September, I visited the supposed Project Site on 22nd October while on my tour of the Zabzugu Constituency with Member of Parliament for the Constituency, John Bennam,” he wrote.
