The Member of Parliament for Dormaa East, Paul Twum-Barimah has asked Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin to recall lawmakers from the break to attend to the crisis occasioned by the spillage of the Akosombo and Kpong Dams.
The flooding has so far displaced over 26,000 residents in parts of the Eastern and Volta regions with no end in sight. Parliament is expected to resume sitting on the 31st of this month.
But addressing the media in Parliament Mr. Twum-Barimah argued the enormity of the crisis which has resulted in calls for declaration of a state of emergency in the affected areas requiring MPs are immediately recalled from their vacation to assist.
“I think it is quite unfortunate and let me send my sympathy to my fellow Ghanaians who are going through these challenges. It is a difficult time at this point. Obviously over 26,000 people were displayed. We have heard and I hope we can quickly attend to their needs.
“As a Parliamentarian I believe that Parliament will reconvene as soon as possible for us to quickly go there and see things for ourselves. See what we can do to help them in difficult times like this. I will call on all meaningful Ghanaians who have the means to support their fellow people at this time,” the lawmaker stated.
He continued: “This is the time that you should show your true citizenship, this is the time we want to see the Ghanaian in you. This is the time that we say be a citizen not a spectator so I will urge all my colleagues and other people to see how we can all come together and help our people.”
