The 9th Parliament of Ghana has finalized the composition of its Appointments Committee, tasked with vetting President John Dramani Mahama’s ministerial nominees.
Chaired by Hon. Bernard Ahthon, the committee comprises members from both the Majority and Minority sides of the House, ensuring a balanced representation of opinions.
The committee’s membership was formalized on January 8, 2025, following a meeting by the Committee of Selection, in line with Article 103 of the 1992 Constitution and the Standing Orders of Parliament.
Notable members include Hon. Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah as Vice Chairperson, Hon. Kwame Governs Agbodza, Hon. Mahama Ayariga, and Hon. Alexander K. Afenyo-Markin as Ranking Member.
The Appointments Committee is responsible for vetting nominees for ministerial, ambassadorial, and other key positions.
Their task is to ensure a rigorous but fair vetting process, especially given the pressing need for the new government to take office.
The Speaker of Parliament emphasized the importance of these appointments in fostering unity and effective governance.
The committee’s composition reflects input from the leadership of both caucities, adhering to the principle of representing diverse opinions in Parliament.
During deliberations, the committee adhered to Standing Orders 216 and 217, ensuring balance and representation in its composition.
