The Ghana Police Service has commended the public for their support but has revealed that during the nationwide demonstration organized by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) on September 17, 2024, a police officer got injured.
According to a statement from the Public Affairs Directorate, the protest concluded peacefully across all 16 regional capitals, except for an isolated confrontation in Kumasi. “The demonstration ended peacefully in all locations with the exception of an isolated incident at Kumasi in the Ashanti region,” the police confirmed.
The disturbance in Kumasi began when some protesters tried to enter the Electoral Commission’s premises by force. “In Kumasi, demonstrators attempted to push their way into the premises of the Electoral Commission and pelted the Police with stones,” the statement read. Despite the brief turmoil, the police were able to restore order. “The Police managed to bring the situation under control and calm was restored,” it added.
Regrettably, one police officer was injured during the altercation and is currently receiving medical care. “However, one Police officer was injured during the incident and he is receiving medical attention,” the statement revealed. Inspector-General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, personally reached out to the officer to check on his condition. “The Inspector-General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has reached out to him via a telephone call and wished him well,” the police noted.
Authorities reassured the public that an investigation into the Kumasi incident has commenced. “The Police have since commenced investigation into the incident,” the statement said, noting that further steps would be taken to ensure accountability.
The Police Service also expressed appreciation to all involved, including the demonstrators, Electoral Commission, and media, for their cooperation during the event. “We wish to thank all stakeholders including the organizers, the demonstrators, the Electoral Commission, the media, and the commuting public for their cooperation throughout the exercise,” the statement conveyed.
The Police praised officers nationwide for their efforts in maintaining peace and order during the protest. “The Inspector-General of Police and the entire leadership of the Police Service would like to express their profound gratitude to all Police officers across the country for their continuous patriotic dedication and commitment to security, law and order in our beloved country,” the police emphasized.
