Once filled with laughter and happy sounds, The Efua Sutherland Children’s Park in Accra now feels lonely and forgotten.
The Efua Sutherland Children’s Park in Accra is a big, beautiful park where children can play and have fun. It was established in 1979 and used to be called Accra Children’s Park. It was later named after famous Ghanaian writer and Children’s author, Efua Theodora Sutherland. Families loved going there for picnics and activities; it was a special place where lots of memories were made.
But now, the children’s park has fallen into disrepair. The once vibrant playground, adorned with beloved attractions like the railway, now appears neglected. The equipment, once a source of joy for children, has become obsolete and rusty. The lush green landscape has wilted, overtaken by weeds, and it now hosts a multitude of insects and reptiles. Sections of dry, dusty ground are now visible, devoid of the once lush green cover. Additionally, sections of the park has been occupied by rubbish, highlighting the neglect it has suffered.
The state of the facility remains stagnant, with little to no development seen since its establishment over a decade ago. In the past, event organizers would frequently rent the space for fairs and exhibitions, but such occasions have become sporadic, causing citizens to lose interest in the park. Many individuals have voiced their disappointment at the park’s ongoing deterioration.
The news team endeavoured to speak to authorities concerning the park’s current and unfortunate state, and though they did mention the park is being attended to and all works will be completed by the close of 2024, constant checks show no action has been taken as yet.
The Efua Sutherland Children’s Park, once alive with laughter, now stands silent, longing for modernization, amid its glaring neglect.
