President John Dramani Mahama has approved a two-year re-engagement of Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno, extending his service beyond the statutory retirement age in December 2025.
The decision, contained in a letter on Tuesday, November 25, 2025 and signed by the Secretary to the President, Callistus Mahama, followed a recommendation by the Police Council.
According to the letter, the extension takes effect from December 28, 2025, during which the IGP will continue to lead the Ghana Police Service and perform all duties attached to the office.
The Presidency said the extension is driven by the Council’s strong belief that Yohuno’s continued leadership is crucial at a time the service is undergoing major reforms.
“The President’s decision reflects the Council’s firm conviction that your continued leadership is essential to sustaining ongoing reforms, strengthening operational effectiveness, and ensuring stability within the Ghana Police Service at this critical period,” the statement noted.
The IGP has been asked to formally confirm acceptance of the extension within three days of receiving the letter.
Copies of the communication were also sent to the Vice President, Chief of Staff, and the Minister for the Interior.
