President John Dramani Mahama has signaled that he is not in a hurry to appoint new Ministers for Defence and Environment, Science and Technology, following the deaths of Dr. Edward Omane Boamah and Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed in the August 3 helicopter crash.
Speaking during a courtesy visit by the Ghana Muslim Mission at Jubilee House, Mahama addressed widespread social media speculation regarding the vacant portfolios. He stressed that the appointments would be made after the holiday season.
Mahama explained that the timing reflects both respect for the late ministers and a desire for careful decision-making.
“Allah gives and Allah takes. He took two of our comrades and we haven’t filled those positions yet,” he said.
The president acknowledged public curiosity about who would succeed the late ministers, noting, “I can see people speculating he’s going to appoint a new defense minister, a new environment minister. We’re not in a hurry.”
He further indicated that the appointments would be made after Christmas and the New Year. “I’ll do those appointments next year after the holiday… Go and enjoy Christmas and then after Christmas we will take a decision on those ones,” Mahama added.
The statement comes amid pressure, particularly from the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), for the Defence Ministry vacancy to be filled swiftly to ensure oversight of national security operations.
