President John Dramani Mahama has inaugurated the newly constituted Governing Council of the Ghana Police Service, urging the members to drive meaningful reforms and prioritise the welfare of officers. The swearing-in ceremony took place on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, at the Jubilee House in Accra.
In his address, President Mahama tasked the Council to address persistent grievances within the service, including undue delays in promotions, and to enhance professionalism and public trust. He also stressed the need for people-centred policing built on accessibility, dialogue, empathy, and community partnerships.

The President commended the Police Service for notable achievements in recent high-profile criminal cases. These include the rescue of two women kidnapped in Nigeria, the arrest of suspects linked to the murder of mobile money merchants, and swift investigations into the murder of five people at Asiyaw.
He reaffirmed government’s full support for the Police Service and the Council, promising to provide the necessary logistics to boost operational efficiency and service delivery.

Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, who chairs the Council, thanked the President for the confidence reposed in them. Speaking on behalf of the Council, she pledged to lead efforts toward a professional, well-trained, accountable Police Service committed to justice and safety. She also called on Council members to remain united in purpose and committed to a fairer, more secure Ghana.

The Police Council is expected to play a critical role in shaping the strategic direction of the Ghana Police Service under the current administration.
