President John Dramani Mahama has disclosed that rehabilitation works are underway to restore the Professor Mills Memorial Library in Cape Coast, which has fallen into disrepair since 2017.
He made the announcement on Thursday, July 24, 2025, during a wreath-laying ceremony at Asomdwee Park in Accra to mark the 13th anniversary of the passing of the late President John Evans Atta Mills.
According to President Mahama, a team led by former Information Minister Kofi Totobi Quakyi is spearheading efforts to return the library to its original purpose of preserving the intellectual and political legacy of the late statesman.
“Before I sit, our aunty raised the issue of the Prof. Mills Memorial Library. Totobi Quakyi has been involved in the library from the time it was built, and after we left office, it fell into a state of despair.”
“We have held this discussion already and I can tell you that Kofi Totobi Quakyi and his small group are already working to bring that memorial library back to its original shape. We will ensure that it achieves the objectives upon which it was set up,” he said.
The event was attended by senior government officials, executives of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), members of the party’s Council of Elders, relatives of the late president, and members of the public. Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang and Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin were also present.
The Atta Mills Memorial Library, an ultra-modern facility, was inaugurated by President Mahama in 2016 to honor the legacy of the late president. It was intended to serve as a center for research and knowledge sharing on governance, peace, and development.
President Mahama further described Professor Mills as a unifying leader who rose above partisan pressures to work in the national interest.
Professor John Evans Atta Mills served as President of Ghana from 2009 until his passing in 2012.
He is widely remembered for his humility, dedication to peace, and advocacy for social justice.
