Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) claimed the Intercontinental Cup after defeating Flamengo 2-1 in a dramatic penalty shootout, following a 1-1 stalemate after extra time.
Russian goalkeeper Matvey Safonov was the standout performer, producing a series of spectacular saves to secure the victory.
The match saw PSG dominate possession with 62% in the first half, creating several scoring opportunities but struggling to break down Flamengo’s resilient defense.
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia put PSG ahead in the 38th minute, only for Flamengo’s Jorginho to equalize from the penalty spot in the 62nd minute.
Safonov, serving as PSG’s backup goalkeeper, saved four penalties—denying Saul Niguez, Pedro, Leo Pereira, and Luiz Araujo—cementing his place in PSG history and ensuring the trophy stayed in Paris.
This triumph adds to an already stellar 2025 for PSG, marking their sixth major title of the year, alongside victories in Ligue 1, the Coupe de France, the Trophée des Champions, the UEFA Champions League, and the UEFA Super Cup.
