Commuters traveling between Tema and Accra may need to make alternative transport arrangements starting tomorrow, as railway workers threaten to shut down operations over seven months of unpaid salaries.
Angry and frustrated, employees of the Ghana Railway Company have issued an ultimatum to management and government authorities: pay the outstanding arrears by the close of today or face a complete halt in operations.
The workers are calling on President John Mahama to intervene urgently to prevent a total collapse of services. According to the Accra Division of the Railway Workers Union, the situation has worsened since the change in government, pushing the already struggling state-owned company deeper into financial distress.
Speaking to Starr News, Branch Secretary of the Accra Railway Workers Union, Franklin Leon Cobbinah, described the situation as critical.
“For the past seven months, we have not been paid. Anytime you ask, nobody is willing to give you any information. We’ve done our best to calm the workers down, but now it’s beyond our control. We are demanding what is rightfully ours,” he said.
If the strike goes ahead, it is expected to paralyze passenger rail services between Tema and Accra, severely affecting thousands of daily commuters.
