Rasta saga: Dissolve Achimota School board – Ras Mubarak urges Adutwum

Former Member of Parliament for Kumbungu Ras Mubarak has called on the Education Minister Dr Yaw Adutwum to dissolve the board of Achimota School over their decision to appeal a High Court ruling on the landmark Rastafarian case.

The Human Rights Division of the Accra High Court on Monday, May 31, ruled that the Achimota School admit two Rastafarian students Tyrone Marhguy and Oheneba Nkrabea after they were denied admission due to their dreadlocks.

But barely seventy-two hours after the judgment, the board of the Achmota school said it would appeal the ruling.

It said in a presser that the school board disagrees with the ruling of the Court and will appeal against it.

But Mr Mubarak believes their reaction is gross disrespect and the minister must act accordingly.

Speaking on the Morning Starr with Francis Abban, he said “the Education Minister has the power to bring to an end all this madness and as I said, if I were in his shoes, I would have reprimanded the board and dissolved it.”

He said he was “very sad that Achimota school is treating the children this way and If the state had not shown enough interest in the minority [and in this case these students], the judgment would have been otherwise.”

He described the board’s actions “I see a board and some element within GES that’s very intransigent and completely stuck in the past because I see no reason why in a time like this, they’re being treated with such disdain.”

“I’m hoping that anyone who feels discriminated against on the basis of religion should actually invoke this brilliant ruling by the high court to access education,” he added.

He stressed, “the minister should reprimand the board and if I was in his shoes, I’ll dissolve the board for such gross disrespect.”

“What they are doing is not promoting co-existence in the country. They are further dividing the nation,” he ended.
