The Secretary of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has critiqued what has been termed the restrictive recruitment process for teacher trainees.
Speaking on Starr FM’s Morning Show, Morning Starr, on Wednesday, NUGS Secretary Bismark Bekoe revealed that the official recruitment portal for qualified teacher trainees was opened and abruptly closed within a mere three-hour window
This, he said, locked out thousands of eligible applicants across the country.
“The recruitment portal for teacher trainees was opened and closed within three hours, leaving many qualified applicants locked out,” Bekoe said.
The 2026 teacher recruitment portal, which was opened by the Ghana Education Service (GES) on April 10, 2026, was closed after the GES received over 40,000 applications for only 7,000 available positions.
The overwhelming response accounted for the early closure of the portal.
But Bekoe insisted such technical manoeuvres exacerbate the already low morale within the teaching profession.
