The Secretary of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS), Bismark Bekoe, has said that a careful assessment of the current working conditions of teachers in Ghana will lead to a conclusion that the profession has been stripped of its professional dignity.
Speaking on Starr FM’s Morning Show, Morning Starr,“on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, Bekoe revealed that there is a growing sense of discontent among teachers in Ghana.
He continued that the continuous neglect of the education sector has forced teachers to view their work as a charitable act rather than a fulfilling career.
“I am beginning to lose interest in teaching. It feels as though we are doing the nation a favour rather than fulfilling a professional duty…,” he said.
His comment is on the back of agitation by the Coalition of Unpaid Teachers, who are demanding 17–18 months of unpaid salaries and delayed staff IDs.
The group marched to the Jubilee House and Ministry of Finance as part of protests to demand immediate payment and a clear resolution to their financial distress.
The group has also threatened to halt all teaching duties.
These difficulties in the sector, Bekoe said, are making him lose interest in the profession.
