The Institute of Local Government Studies says about 75 percent of Ghanaians who will turn up to vote in the December 17 referendum on local level elections will vote yes .

According to the institute, their survey suggests that about 66 percent of Ghanaians are willing to head to the polls to participate in the referendum

“The results that we found was that about 66 percent of registered voters of 16.8 million are aware of the referendum of which 67 percent are ready to turn up. Of this 67 percent that are willing to turn up, 75 percent said they will vote YES if the elections were organised at the time when we organised the study,” Director for the Institute, Dr. Nicholas Awortwi noted while presenting the report to the media monday.

He however noted people in their twenties are the least informed about the survey.

The findings of the survey is in sharp contrast to a recent one conducted by the CDD which said only 42% of Ghanaians are aware of the exercise.

According to the report, though the majority of those interviewed in the survey say they will vote, as much as 51% say they are not aware of the upcoming referendum.

The impending referendum to be held on December 17, 2019, is an exercise that the nation is going through to answer the “Yes” or “No” question as to whether the law should be changed to enable MMDCEs to be elected on partisan lines or not.

Dr Emmanuel Akwetey, the Executive Director of the Institute of Democratic Governance (IDEG) has described the upcoming referendum on political party involvement in local level elections as phenomenal urging Ghanaians to vote ‘yes’ on December 17.

Among personalities who are hoping a ‘yes’ vote wins the day are President Akufo-Addo and former EC Boss Afari Gyan.
