Second lady Hajia Samira Bawumia has presented Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) and other items to the Maamobi General Hospital and Nima Polyclinic in the Ayawaso North and East municipalities in Accra.

The two municipalities with the highest concentration of Muslims in Accra, have been identified as hot-spots for the coronavirus in Ghana, recording more than six hundred (600) suspected cases.

The PPEs which included protective gowns, facemasks, face shields, surgical gloves, are expected to assist the staff of the two facilities in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. The other items include veronica buckets, bins, washing bowls hand sanitizers, liquid soap, packs of bottled water, boxes of biscuits and bottles of folic acid for the antenatal unit.

Addressing the media, Mrs. Bawumia, who is also a known humanitarian, highlighted the need to reach out to the vulnerable and most importantly, health workers during this period. She reinforced President Akufo-Addo’s gratitude to health workers for their selflessness and patriotism to the country in these times. “I want to add my voice to that of His Excellency the President, in thanking you all for your selflessness during this period. The Ghanaian people are truly grateful”, she noted.

The Medical Superintendent of the Maamobi General Hospital, Doctor Dorcas Okine, commended the Second Lady for taking into consideration, the wellbeing of the staff and patients of the facility. She said the items would go a long way to ease the pressure on the facility and improve their sanitation as well.

The Medical Superintendent for the Nima Polyclinic, Doctor George Ahorlu, also expressed the gratitude of his facility to the Second Lady for the kind gesture.

The Second Lady is noted for having equipped five (5) hospitals, four (4) health facilities and eighteen (18) community-based health planning and services (CHPS) compounds across the country, through her Samira Empowerment and Humanitarian Projects through (SEHP).

It can be recalled, that she recently made huge donations to the Pantang and Accra Psychiatric Hospitals to aid them in the fight against Covid-19 in Ghana.

Ghana’s COVID-19 case count currently stands at six thousand and ninety-six (6096), one thousand seven hundred and seventy-three recoveries (1773) with thirty-one (31) deaths as at Wednesday, May 20, 2020.
