Lead Spokesperson of the Bawumia 2024 Presidential Campaign, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has laid into President John Mahama over his suspension of Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkonoo, observing that the move sets a bad example for future governments.
Speaking to GH One TV during a staged demonstration against the Chief Justice’s suspension, Mr. Aboagye said the move did not bode well for the country’s democracy.
He urged the president to reverse course, saying that “if he doesn’t, what he has done is that he has set a precedent” for any future administration to facilitate processes to oust an incumbent Chief Justice as provided for in Article 146 of the Constitution.
He said the demonstrators had turned up to send a strong message to the government to stay away from judicial interference.
The Save the Judiciary is organized by opposition political parties led by the New Patriotic Party in opposition to President Mahama’s decision to suspend Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo
Following an establishment of a prima facie case against the Chief Justice by the Council of State which stemmed from at least three petitions accusing her of wrongdoing, President Mahama set-up a five-member committee to probe the matter and suspended the Chief Justice.
Since the president’s unprecedented decision, both sides of the political divide have been debating the constitutionality of the suspension.
The committee to investigate the allegations raised against the Chief Justice is set to commence its work soon.
Meanwhile, the NPP and other political groups are attacking the move as politically motivated.
