President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to a strong and resilient military, even in the face of limited resources, highlighting the increasingly complex security environment in Ghana and the wider sub-region.
He said this while addressing graduates at the Ghana Military Academy on Friday, January 30, 2026.
According to him, the commissioning of new officers underscores the state’s determination to safeguard national security.
“The security situation in our sub-region remains complex and volatile. Violent extremism, terrorism, and trans-border crime continue to pose serious threats, particularly along our northern border,” he noted.
President Mahama also pointed to global shifts in security, including the rise of non-state actors and asymmetric warfare, stressing that tackling these challenges requires collaboration beyond the armed forces.
“Security cannot be seen as the sole responsibility of the armed forces and other security agencies. It is a shared national duty,” he said, calling on citizens, communities, traditional authorities, and civil society to contribute to protecting the nation’s peace.
